The Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center Fertility Research Institute is one of the most progressive male fertility clinics in the world. The broad range of services offered by the Institute includes:

Sperm banking

The Fertility Research Institute sperm bank supports donations for women who have no other means of getting pregnant and preserves sperm for men undergoing medical treatments that might affect sperm quality.

Qualifying sperm donors must be young males in good health who pass a series of health tests, genetic evaluations, and personal interviews. In Israel, sperm donation is anonymous; donor identity cannot be tracked, even when the offspring reaches legal age. The Institute operates a sophisticated laboratory for testing sperm, and performs testicular surgical procedures to extract sperm for in vitro fertilization.

The sperm bank is authorized by the Israel Ministry of Health.

Fertility treatment

The Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center Fertility Research Institute offers the following treatments:
Treatment for couples who cannot conceive due to low quality sperm
Focused exams, health assessments, blood tests, genetic testing, and ultrasounds determine the diagnosis for couples who cannot conceive. Treatment options include medication, surgery, and/or integrated treatment for preparing sperm in the lab for insemination.

Cryopreserving sperm for men undergoing medical treatment or men with other requirements Men undergoing medical treatment which may impact sperm quality or men who have other personal requirements can have sperm preserved for future use at Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center’s Fertility Research Institute.

Treating single or married women who need sperm donations to conceive
The typical treatment path is to introduce donated sperm via intrauterine insemination following the woman’s natural ovulation cycle. If this approach is not successful, superovulation induction medication may be used.

Treatments are tailored based on the age of the woman, preferences, and medication side effects. If these conception alternatives do not succeed, the woman can seek in vitro fertilization with the Medical Center.

Superovulation
In order to increase the chances of sperm reaching and fertilizing an egg, superovulation is induced to generate a large number of eggs during ovulation.

It is important to emphasize that treatment, use of medication, and number of treatment cycles are discussed thoroughly with the patient to help define expectations, understand chances, and explain the risks associated with the treatments.

Surgical sperm retrieval
Surgical sperm retrieval enables men to help conceive a child despite low sperm count due to blockages, low production, or other causes. Surgical techniques, including microsurgery enable surgeons to extract samples from the testicles. Once the samples are analyzed, each sperm is injected directly into the ova using the ICSI IVF technique and the remaining sperm is preserved for future use. To optimize the chance of conception, the woman typically undergoes ovulation or superovulation induction to prepare for the ICSI process.

Complementary/alternative fertility treatment

These treatments are also alternatives available at the Fertility Research Institute for women with unexplained infertility and men with low sperm quality. Options include acupuncture, herbal remedies, nutrition, and/or other methods clinically proven to be effective. Treatment candidates are evaluated by a fertility doctor before proceeding with treatment and are monitored by a physician on an ongoing basis.

Emotional support services

Most of the time, couples and individuals who turn to Lis Maternity Hospital for fertility services have already gone through many conception attempts: natural conception, previous treatments—and are now at an important junction in their lives. Typically, people undergoing fertility treatments experience a range of emotions. They want to understand the process, treatment duration, and chances for success. Familiar and new feelings of anticipation, grief, and anxiety are common and normal. Professional support is available to help couples and individuals manage these emotions—to understand the emotional process that accompanies the medical process and to garner strength when it’s needed.

All discussions are conducted with discretion and confidentiality in a supportive environment. Issues that cannot be shared with a partner, friend, or family can be discussed openly at the Fertility Research Institute.

Support groups are offered periodically for individuals and couples undergoing fertility treatment. The groups offer the opportunity to share experiences and obtain support from peers with a common goal. The groups are facilitated by staff psychologists and team members of the Fertility Research Institute.

Laboratory services

The Fertility Research Institute boasts an extensive lab for:

  • Sperm testing
  • Preparing sperm for intrauterine insemination
  • Cryopreserving sperm samples and testicular tissue

In addition to regular sperm testing, the laboratory conducts unique tests, such as Y chromosome testing, cervical sperm penetration tests, adhesion assays (testing sperm adhesion to the ovum’s membrane), glandular markers in semen, semen cultures, anti-sperm antibodies, and meiosis monitoring. Testing at the laboratory is overseen by the UK NEQAS Andrology Scheme, the international quality organization based in England. All tests are conducted in compliance with World Health Organization guidelines. The sperm bank is authorized by the Israel Ministry of Health.

In addition to evaluating and treating individuals and couples seeking fertility assistance, the Institute also provides extensive laboratory services to external facilities.
